Practical Blackjack Advice for the Recreational Player

Date Published: September 6, 2013

Blackjack is a game that has an incredible amount of strategic depth. However, recreational players don't really have the time to put in hours of study each week to be able to play mathematically perfect blackjack. The reason for this is that while there are perfect strategies formed and created that you can learn, they change based on the rules of the individual game that you're playing. There are tons of different rule combinations, so you might spend 50 hours learning a specific type of blackjack only be confronted with a new game where your bulk of knowledge is mostly useless. Here we offer some practical advice that will help no matter what type of blackjack you play.

The first thing you need to know is that not all dealer cards are created equal. The strongest cards for the dealer to have are a ten or ace, though any card seven or higher is considered a strong card. The weakest cards that the dealer can have, starting with the weakest, are six, five, four three and two. Whenever you're against a weak card, the dealer has a high chance of going bust. This means that with hard hands, you have to be less aggressive with your hitting, and with soft hands, you have to be more aggressive with your doubling.

When you're playing against strong cards, you mostly should just hit with hard hands until you get at least 17 or hit with soft hands until you get at least 18. However, if you have an eleven, you can double against an opponent who has any strong card except for an ace. Along similar lines, you can double with a total of ten against dealer cards of seven, eight and nine.

When you're playing blackjack on a regular basis, make sure to practice good bankroll management. This means breaking up the amount of money that you have dedicated to online gambling into a few hundred parts and only betting one of those parts at a time. For example, if you have a bankroll of $300, you should probably stick to $0.50 or $1 bets. This will help to make sure that you are betting large enough for the money to mean something while playing low enough that your bankroll will help sustain any major swings that you have.
